Abstract
This paper gives a brief introduction to the scope and development of the Text Encoding Initiative's Recommendations, due for publication in July 1993. A brief technical overview of the scheme's modular architecture is given, paying particular attention to the proposals for representation of pointers and links, which may be regarded as a «poor man's Hytime»
